APPARATUS AND EQUIPMENT

MECHANICS SCHOOL

MARCH 8-12, 2010

 

The school is being held at the Chemeketa Community College Regional Training Facility, 4910 Brooklake Rd. N.E. Salem Or. 97305, (take exit 263 on I-5 and go east one mile and the facility will be on the right).
Class study materials, lunches, and refreshments will be provided.

 

                ***Students do not have to be a member of O.F.A.E.M.A. to attend Classes.***
 
SCHOLARSHIP 

Each year the Oregon Fire Apparatus and Equipment Mechanics Association awards the Gerald Nordlund Memorial Scholarship, which is a full scholarship for one person.  It includes lodging, meals, and all week attendance at the school.
This year H&W Emergency Vehicles is again sponsoring a tuition only scholarship for one student.
The only criteria for these, is that the scholarship applicant must be in good standing with a paid or volunteer fire department, and must be involved with the maintenance and operation of emergency apparatus and equipment.
 
 
 
 

 
LODGING: For students needing overnight accommodations, we have a block of rooms at a special discount rate at the Phoenix Inn North, at the Market street exit on I-5 in Salem.  Room rates will be $70+ tax.  To get this rate you must call 1-888-239-9593 and tell them you are with the Oregon Fire Mechanics School. The reservation deadline to receive this rate is February 5, 2010. Continental Breakfast is included. Students are welcome to visit the Hospitality room at the Phoenix Inn, room 101, starting Sunday evening the 7th, and every night after classes for networking with other technicians and the instructors.
VENDOR SHOW: This year will be on Thursday, the 11th, starting at 12:00 p.m. at the school location. We invite you to come and see what's new and meet with your equipment dealers. The Vendor show is Free and open to anyone to attend.  Food & drinks will be provided, along with door prizes throughout the show.
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING & BANQUET: will be held on Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Phoenix Room, at the Phoenix Inn North. Dinner will be served at 6:30, catered by Busters Barbecue. Students and guests are welcome: cost will be $20.00 per person. Due to requirements by the caterer, there will be a very limited number of banquet tickets available at the door, so please order you dinner tickets early. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.
EVT TESTING: There will be Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification testing on Friday and Saturday Mornings at 8:00. Students wishing to to take the EVT exams must be pre-registered with the EVT Certification Commission. Students may now log on to www.evtcc.org to download registration forms, reference material lists, and learning objectives. Our EVTCC Special Test Site #OR0310. Students need to be registered with EVTCC by February 22nd, 2010. 
Registration will be handled on a first come, first served basis.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
7 NEW CLASSES BEING OFFERED THIS YEAR

Introduction to Supervision & Management. (1 day) Monday, 8:00-5:00
             This eight (8) hour course provides an overview of the primary functions of supervision and management including the traditional management functions of planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. Other aspects of supervision and management include personnel management issues and legal and regulatory provisions. All of the topics included in the program have the potential to directly impact maintenance and shop operations within an agency or organization.

Time Management & Delegation. (1/2 day) A.M. Tuesday, 8:00-12:00                                                   
             This four (4) hour course focuses on workable techniques that supervisors and managers can employ to manage time effectively. As additional responsibilities are imposed on supervisors and managers it is critical that they adopt effective time management techniques. An emphasis is placed on delegation as a valuable time management tool and the nine (9) key requirements for effective delegation.

Stress Management. (1/2day) P.M. Tuesday, 1:00-5:00
          
This four (4) hour program addresses the increasingly important aspect of stress in the workplace and its potential catastrophic impact if it is not addressed. In addition to learning how to recognize stress in others and major aspect is how to determine the level of stress each individual is experiencing. Finally, various stress reduction techniques are identified that enable an individual to lower their respective workplace stress levels.

Interpersonal Styles.  (1/2 day) A.M. Wednesday, 8:00-12:00
           This four (4) hour program focuses on the concept that you cannot effectively communicate and supervise other individuals until you are comfortable with whom you are in terms of your own interpersonal style. A simple but effective survey instrument is utilized in order for each attendee to identify his / her interpersonal style. Once an individual recognizes his / her style then a more effective and efficient method of communicating with others can be accomplished. The program focuses on eight interpersonal styles ranging from the “Rugged Individualist” to the consummate “Team Player.”

Conflict Resolution.  (1/2 day) P.M. Wednesday, 1:00-5:00
            This four (4) hour program is designed to address the disruptive aspect of workplace conflict. Specifically the various sources or types of conflict are identified as well as the steps in conflict diagnoses. An important aspect of conflict diagnosis is to determine the nature of the conflict, i.e. is it due to a difference in facts, methods, goals, or values. Each of these requires a different approach to resolve the conflict. Finally, various strategies for handling or resolving workplace conflict are identified and discussed.

 Planning as a Managerial Tool.  (1day) Thursday, 8:00-5:00
            
This eight (8) hour course addresses the various types of planning that an organization should do and the vital role that the vehicle and equipment maintenance functions play in organizational planning. The importance of an organization to plan is identified and illustrative examples of learning organizations are discussed. The types of planning that are identified, defined, and discussed include strategic, succession, project, physical or forecast based, financial, operational and finally the important function of strategic management.

Ethics for the Supervisor/Manager: (1/2 day) Friday, 8:00-12:00
            This four (4) hour program discusses one of the most critical issues facing supervisors  and managers today. Ethical behavior and the relationship of personal ethics to organizational ethical standards is a subject that is increasingly contributing to supervisory difficulties.  The supervisor / manager must provide the model for ethical behavior within his / her work unit.  Unfortunately some supervisors / managers fall into ethical traps without even realizing the treacherous slope they are going down. This course identifies these ethical traps and concerns and provides guidance to the supervisor / manager for avoiding these ethical issues.

These Management classes being offered are new to our association only. They are modeled after classes from the National Fire Acedemy in Emmitsburg. They are not directly a prep for the EVTCC management tests, but are excellent information for managers.

  

 


  

Aerial Dynamics: (4 day) Monday thru Thrusday, 8:00-5:00

This class identifies the advanced skills and knowledge necessary for the contemporary fire apparatus mechanic. It addresses the latest level of expertise needed to properly maintain the aerial fire apparatus in service today. Covers physical Principals of construction, testing and preventative maintenance of aerial devices commonly found in the fire service. This is a preparatory class for the EVTCC F5, and CFMA Aerial Certification. Textbook will be provided.  THIS CLASS IS AN EVT F5 PREP CLASS. A Calculator, Coveralls, & Eye Protection will be required.

Mobile Hydraulics: (4 day) Monday thru Thursday, 8:00-5:00
            This class is a review of basic open & closed center mobile hydraulic systems. Will cover orientate component identification, reading schematics, and troubleshooting techniques. Hydraulics Trainer Board to make hydraulic circuits will be there. Work book provided. An Interactive CD that correlates with the class book will be available at the school for an additional $30 each or A 6 cd set on hydraulics is available for $150 additional at the school.  THIS CLASS IS AN EVT F8 PREP CLASS.

 Harrison Hydraulic Generators: (AM) Monday, 8:00-12:00
             Class will cover generator types, drive types, models, proper sizing, hydraulic requirements, drive requirements, heat exchangers, electrical systems, cooling, preventing air recirculation, and troubleshooting.

Tire & Wheel Maintenance: (AM) Tuesday, 8:00-12:00
Class will cover tire safety, selection, inspection, proper inflation, maintenance, DOT codes, & Torque Specs.
Instructor: Jeff Taylor, Les Schwab Tires.
Hale Pumps: (2 day) Wednesday & Thursday, 8:00-5:00
            Students will learn centrifugal fire pump operation, maintenance, & overhaul. Attendees will acquire a better understanding of Hale fire pumps, and accessories, so they can operate, maintain and repair pumps more efficiently and reliably, as well as learn of new developments in the fire equipment. Class will cover the maintenance and repair of Hale Midship pump, and accessories. There will be a pump teardown and reassembly on Thursday.

Allison Transmissions: (1 day) Wednesday, 8:00-5:00
The Allison program will be geared to prepare participants to take the EVTF-6 Test. Transmission types covered: MT600 Series, HT700 Series, 3000 and 4000 Series. The Allison EVT F-6 action packed day will cover the following Objective areas: Operating Principles, Preventive Maintenance Support, Troubleshooting Procedures, Electronic Controls, Output Retarder, and Reference Material. Please note that you need to come prepared for the test and utilize this program to enhance your understanding of the objective areas. THIS IS AN EVT F6 PREP CLASS.

Fire Apparatus Foam Systems: (1 day) Thursday, 8:00-5:00
The Foam Systems class will be geared to prepare participants to take the EVT F-7 Test. We will cover manually operated, automatic operated systems, low energy, high energy systems. The Foam Systems EVT F-7 program will cover the following Objective areas: Principles of Foam, Foam Systems and Operations, Mechanical Components, Maintenance and Testing. Please note that you must come prepared for the test, this program is designed to enhance your understanding of the objective areas and to improve your understanding of how foam works. THIS IS AN EVT F7 PREP CLASS.

Apparatus Pump Testing: (1 day) Friday, 8:00-5:00
Class follows the NFPA 1911 Standards for Service Tests on Fire Department Apparatus. A hands on pump test will be conducted in the afternoon. EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: gloves and Helmet for actual test.
Instructor: Don Gleason, Master Level III Technician, Eugene Fire & EMS.
 
Apparatus Accident Trial: (1/2 day) Thursday 2:00-5:00
The class will simulate an actual Court Room pre trial hearing for a fatal accident that involves a fire apparatus and civilian vehicle. This is a precursor for the actual trial that will be played out in the 2011 Fire Mechanics School.

Stihl Saw Maintenance: (1/2 day) Tuesday 1:00-5:00
Class will cover chainsaw safety & maintenance, engine theory, and hands on demonstration of field maintenance procedures. Class will break into groups to allow attendees to perform common maintenance that should happen after each use. This includes air filter, fuel filter maintenance, cooling and drive system maintenance, minor repairs – starter rope, fuel filter, etc.
STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BRING A SAW AND TOOLS FOR THIS CLASS.
Dress appropriately, i.e. long pants, long shirt sleeves, boots, gloves & eye protection.
PLEASE DRAIN FUEL AND OIL FROM SAW.
